KOCHI: A cursory glance at the ISL standings may lead one to believe that 11th-placed Punjab FC stands little chance against third-placed Kerala Blasters as they clash at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium on Monday evening. However, the ISL newcomers have proven themselves capable of orchestrating an upset, as demonstrated in their match against Bengaluru FC, where they triumphed 3-1.
Facing a slew of injuries, the Blasters have managed to keep their losses to just three out of 13 games this season. Nonetheless, their recent defeat against Odisha FC, in which they succumbed 1-2 in Bhubaneswar, has left coach Ivan Vukomanovic with ample cause for concern. Vukomanovic’s squad struggled to contain the formidable Roy Krishna in that encounter, as he effortlessly breached the Blasters’ defense.
The visiting team on Monday boasts individuals with similar prowess who could pose a threat to the Blasters’ goal. Punjab harbors a pair of sharp strikers in Luka Majcen and Jordan Gil, both adept at seizing opportunities. However, it may be Madih Talal who presents the greatest danger to the Blasters, given his dual capacity to create and finish scoring chances. Talal has notched two goals and provided three assists for Punjab this season, and his influence on the pitch continues to grow.
“Our current formation is yielding positive results, and we intend to maintain our approach. With each passing game, the team is gaining invaluable experience and confidence. Despite the absence of key players due to injuries, Kerala Blasters remain a formidable side. The absence of their talismanic leader, Adrian Luna, is keenly felt by the Blasters. Vukomanovic is counting on his seasoned players to fill the void left by Luna. In particular, he expects Dimitrios Diamantakos to shoulder greater responsibility on the field, particularly in light of the absence of his striking partner, Kwame Peprah, sidelined due to injury.

A strong start at home is crucial as we approach the latter part of the season, where we have four more home games alongside five away fixtures. Therefore, it is imperative that we strive to accumulate as many points as possible,” emphasized Vukomanovic.
